In 2020, the co-founders of Radiant Rural visited Kinyangiri Village, a remote rural community in Singida Region, Tanzania, for a family visit. When COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, their stay was unexpectedly extended by a month.
This gave them the opportunity to spend more time in the village and get to know the community. During their stay, they noticed many children under the age of six spending their days roaming the village streets. Despite having a large population of young children, Kinyangiri had no early childhood development centre or playground.
Many children stayed at home with little opportunity to learn or play. Some played alone in the streets, while others followed their parents or relatives to work. Sadly, some children could also be found around bus stands, bars and shops, sometimes begging for food or money.
Concerned by what they witnessed, the co-founders discussed the situation with local government leaders and members of the community. There was a clear consensus that the village needed a centre where young children could learn, play and develop. However, local leaders explained that the village had neither the financial resources nor the capacity to build such a facility.
The co-founders believed that education is one of the most powerful tools for empowering communities and creating opportunities for children. They therefore decided to take action.
They committed to helping the children of Kinyangiri by establishing an early childhood development centre and a safe playground - the beginning of what would become Radiant Rural.
